Tracing from the linux box gives:
1 CPE-24-192-48-1.nsw.bigpond.net.au (24.192.48.1) 29.652 ms 25.809
ms 19.941 ms
2 ext-router.nsw-remote.bigpond.net.au (24.192.4.3) 11.551 ms 12.161
ms 16.851 ms
3 192.148.140.166 (192.148.140.166) 46.395 ms 9.528 ms 46.955 ms
4 192.148.140.22 (192.148.140.22) 41.870 ms 34.751 ms 38.987 ms
5 Fddi1-1-0.pad13.Sydney.telstra.net (139.130.34.129) 45.247 ms
20.269 ms 18.823 ms
6 FastEthernet0-0-0.pad18.Sydney.telstra.net (139.130.249.239) 32.157
ms 12.738 ms 48.037 ms
7 optvs.lnk.telstra.net (139.130.33.190) 31.481 ms 26.555 ms 17.736
ms
8 atmsr-1-7.mi1.optus.net.au (202.139.0.150) 32.004 ms 26.575 ms
30.916 ms
so you would expect the gateway @ telstra to be 24.192.4.3, but if you
try to add this as a default route it blackholes the box. Any reason the
box knows where to go without a default route ??
