I finally got to buy a couple of Courier V.Everything's last year (cheap
and secondhand from an ISP selloff, from aus.ads.forsale.computers.used)
and they're currently running my home link.

They're excellent. Big, black, flashy red lights, volume slider, quick
reference of AT commands printed on the bottom, full online help by
AT commands, DIP switches so you can say things like ignore DTR (ie
"I don't care if I reboot my computer or move your cable about, just
leave the link up"), a programmable switch (labelled VOICE/DATA, but it
can run any command)...

Surely you jest?

I must admit I've never really played with fax on modems, but it certainly
says its supported in all the firmware I've seen.

Anyway, there's two approaches to buying a modem. One way is to buy a
cheap modem that "works for you" - well, until you move, or change your
ISP or they upgrade their dialin servers. The other way is to get an
expensive modem which may not have so many cut corners, but even they
will fail you sometimes.

Nick.
