I have been using LS120 disks to transfer files between home and work
for about a year now and have not had any problems so far. I have had
more troubles with trying to copy a large number of files from a zip
disk.

I don't know whether it is mtools. I usually mount the disk and then
copy the files rather than use mtools. This may not be an option on
machines in student labs though. I only tend to use mtools for standard
floppies.
