-xf86config only works as real root.

Maybe you could use the "-bpp" option to change bits-per-pixel.
XF86Config lets you specify a different resolution for different bpp
values.

e.g. xinit -- :1 -bpp 15

then in XF86Config:

    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       15
        Modes       "800x600"
    EndSubsection

_IF_ your server supports 15 bpp. Which X-server do you have?
