[plug] Passing parameters/Boot profiles...

Is there any easy way to pass additional boot parameters to Linux as it boots?
Example boot profiles could be used to Enable/Disable X-Windows auto-start, or
to set up different settings (network, video, etc...).

In the past, I have done this with different init levels, and having inittab
process different scripts. Alternatively, I've used Windows config.sys menus
combined with Loadlin which set up a "config" file on a FAT partition which
Linux then read to alter the config.

Neither solution is overly neat. A nicer way would be if additional Boot params
(loadlin/lilo) could be accessed somehow (environ variables?) such that a
startup script could process them.

Are there any packages/suites (pref Debian) specifically for this sort of
profile behaviour?
Any other ideas?
