Hi All
Navarre asked me last night about the Promise FastTrak66 RAID controller,
and someone else mentioned it is possible to convert a Promise Ultra66
controller (which is 1/3 the price) to a FastTrak66 controller with a very
simple modification. Details can be found at:
http://www5.tomshardware.com/storage/00q1/000329/fastrak66-05.html
Anyway, this subject happened to come up on the Linux Kernel mailing list
last night, and official word from Alan Cox (Kernel Hacker Extraordinaire)
is that the RAID card is pretty much useless under Linux because all it
does (under windows) is implement software RAID at the driver level -
which Linux already does itself anyway.
So the only point of using a Promise card would be to add another couple
of IDE channels - so don't buy the FastTrak66, buy the Ultra66, and don't
bother modifying it.
