I've got a spare Xircom PC card ethernet/modem 33.6 that works with
Linux, contact me off-list if interested.

Regarding the laptops question, I'm using an Acer TravelMate 580DX which
works fine even including the inbuilt winmodem.  Needed some tweaking
but everything (APM, IR, USB, video, sound) is Linux-friendly.  No major
complaints.
