[plug] sound configuration

Hi, Pluggers..

Perhaps someone could help with my sound card configuration?

The sound card is Creative Sound Blaster PCI64 model ES1370
CDrom drive is Sony CD-R/RW CRX100E (ATAPI)

/etc/modules has been modified by commenting out lines:
	alias char-major-14 off
	alias sound off
	alias midi off

	and activating the line:
	alias char-major-14 es1370

/opt/kde/bin/startkde has been modified by changing the lines:
	startifaudio kaudioserver
	startifaudio kwmsound

to	kaudioserver &
	kwmsound &

actions like 'cat /usr/share/sounds/wav/applause.wav > /dev/audio'
	produce sound.
executing 'cat /dev/sndstat' produces 'cat: /dev/sndstat: No such
	device' even though /dev/sndstat in fact exists.
executing lsmod produces:

but kcsd produces no sound. It thinks it's playing - the drive light
shows activity and track change buttons etc seem to work - but no noise!

Any ideas on where I should go from here?
