Yah I am sure imap is probably overkill though I seem to remember that
redhat put Imap and pop3 in the same RPM - someone correct me if i'm
wrong.

Anyway you can leave pop3 running if you need it but I would
disable imap by commenting out the imapd entry in /etc/inetd.conf and
then restart inetd by using 

kill -HUP <pid_of_inetd>
