Also check that the default setting is actually going to reply to you. From
memory, ATE1Q0V1 will usually turn on echo, turn off quiet mode, turn on
verbal responses (instead of numeric responses).
The ATZ resets the modem to the defaults, AT&W writes the current settings
as defaults. Make sure they are all set how you want them.
