I ended up using taper.  It handled my scsi tape easily by just starting it
with "taper -T scsi".
Taper found the tape immediately and worked very easily.
It has many nice features that let you select compression types (compress or
gzip) and many other user preferances.

I plan to use it to backup some of my smbmounts (windows boxes on my home (3
node) network) after I read up on the methods in my Samba book.
