Thanks to those who suggested solutions for my vmWare problems.  I wound up
deleting all vmWare's virtual machine files and creating a new VM.
Everything went perfectly from there, although suddenly my (emulated) SCSI
cd-rw shows up as an IDE drive.  Still, one can't have everything, can one?
