I used to use dyndns a while a go and it was very well run.  If you make a 
small contribution to them they let you set the master name server for your 
sub-domain, then you can propagate your own sub-sub-domains at will, and 
control the TTLs :)

I ran permanent on a dynamic IP dial-up for 2 years that way.

They have lots of contributed Linux scripts to upload new IP information too.
