You don't need to update everything.
One of the advantages of Debian is that you can have a mixture.  Doing as
I described would leave your system as potato, with only the sndconfig
package (and anything it depends on) from woody.
Changing sources.list to point back to potato afterwards would ensure that
anything else you install would come from potato.
