Two suggestions:

In console mode, use ncFTP - a wrapper around normal ftp to do nice things
like command line completion and easy recursive gets. As the name suggests,
it's FTP downloads only.

Under X, use GTM - the Gnome Transfer Manager; drag and drop files from a
web site, etc onto the panel, and it will schedule downloads, perform
downloads in parallel, and resume interrupted downloads. This is a GTK/Gnome
application, but Konqueror works fine with it too. It supports both HTTP and
FTP downloads.

Enjoy
