This may sound like a stupid question, but why don't you juse use NFS (a.k.a.
No F***ing Security)?

It might be a necessary compatibility issue. You probably can't open a file
with a '?' in the file name from Windows so they've made it compatible. The
best thing would probably download and compile the latest source and if the
bug is still in it then report it as a bug (if someone else hasn't already)
then they know about it and can ignore it.

This is a problem with MP3's. The best rule is to have the ID3 tags correct
with the '?' in it and have a close approximation in the file name.
