[plug] iiNet ADSL experience

You are correct.

We lease ADSL ports of telstra. Telstra route *all* traffic to and from
the ADSL link to our office in QV1. In our instance, we allocate each port
a block of IP address's and setup the Speedtouch modems in bridge
mode. It's just like having an ethernet link to the internet :-)

One thing I feel I should state. Some of our clients have been plugging
the Speed touch modems directly into a switch/hub. They have
then been allocating specific computers on their LAN the static IP's we've
allocated them. This works great as the speed touch modem sends all IP
traffic to the switch/hub which sends it to the correct computer. However,
the new bug/exploit in the speedtoouch modems has the potential to allow
a mallicous user the ability to access the modem directly. If the ADSL
modem is connected to a hub/switch, the malicious user suddenly has access
to your whole LAN. This be bad....

It's a much better idea to connect the ADSL modem to a linux gateway and
setup a firewall rullset. In the event that the modem got hacked. They
can only access you linux box which has a firewall anyway. This does
require two network cards though...
