You may be interested in at least the first page of this little article:

Specifically this bit at the start:
I am always interested in the zany stuff Hollywood tries to pass off as
an operating system whenever the characters in a movie have to deal with
computers. Burdened with restrictive licenses and software developers who
are apparently unwilling to pay product placement fees, filmmakers have
opted to create fake "operating systems" that the characters of the movie
can interact with, rather then have them use something like Linux, Mac
OS, Windows, or something else that's authentic.
...and this bit just underneath:
The Matrix is the extreme of creativity for a fake OS.
I honestly have no idea what the creators of "The Matrix" used for the
initial Neo-at-the-computer shot though - but odds are strong that they
got a graphic artist to simply mock up some funky stuff that looked like
windows scrolling and twitching back and forth. You'll notice Keanu doesn't
actually interact with the computer in any way until the text-only display
pops up.
Also interesting to note the selection of keys he tries to get rid of the
text "Wake up, Neo" initially. ;-)
Pete.

We don't really understand it, so we'll give it to the programmers.
