[plug] Using X11 fonts

No comment I can see in the PLUG list archive disusses this so here goes ...

I've got XFree86 v4 running and KDE and I'm tweeking fonts for Wine. The directory:
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
has a heap of fonts that are gzipped. Does X autotragically ungzip these on the fly or do I need to ungzip them in the dir and then use:
mkfontdir
in the directory as normal ?
