For future reference, if you encounter problems so bad that you can't 
even boot to runlevel 1, try the following:

(at lilo:)
linux init=/bin/bash

(kernel loads, drops straight to prompt w/o even starting init)

devfsd /dev (if you need it)
mount /proc
mount / -o rw,remount
mount (other partitions like /usr etc as needed)

then start your fixing. Don't forget to

umount (other partitions)
sync
sync
sync
umount /proc
mount / -o ro,remount

before CTL-ALT-DEL or the magic reset button.
