I thought most modern (ATA-1 and above, basically) disks had very little
correspondance between the logical (linux or BIOS-visible) and physical
disk layouts, making this sort of thing pointless?

I seem to remember hearing somebody bitching about how ATA didn't allow
easy discovery of physical disk layout and geometry for exactly this
kind of performance tweak. Hmm... think they were a database type, actually.

SCSI isn't much better, from memory.
