yes, I thought I included the "error 53" text just after that suggestion, it didn't work either :-(

One step ahead of you there.  I went through the smb.conf file from the older version of e-smith that I've been running for about a year problem free and added/changed several settings, including this one, testing and restarting samba as I went along, no luck  :-(

I'll try that.  If I don't post with a load exclaimation of joy from success, then it would be safe to assume that this, too, did not work.

tried something very similar to that already (see comments above), no luck, which makes me suspect the problem lies outside of the smb.conf file.  

I'll keep trying, and when I eventually do solve it, I'll report back :-)
