Goes to show what happens if you listen to IBM. During the initial install they suggested I stay with the driver on the supplied CD.

Hey, Jon, the Broadcom 5700 driver version 2.2.27 sounds wwwaaayyy
old. Have you had a look at their website (www.broadcom.com) because
there is a 6.2.11 version there that is supposed to be the bees' knees,
even solves my zero-MAC-addy problem without updating the firmware. I can
ftp to you if you like.
