export an LD_PRELOAD ? Might work on the CGI version, but I doubt it'd 
work for the apache so mod. Otherwise, yeah - recompile.

This libpng problem has been around for quite some time in Debian - I've 
certainly run into it in Woody. Never did find a decent solution.
