(3.5.1) but am still failing to get connected. I am at the end of my tether
here and am quite willing to pay for someone to come and set it all up!

Ahhh! Dont give up that easily! We were all newbies once :)

I would expect the RH8 machine to have 2 ethernet cards, one for ADSL and one
connected to the hub.

cool, thats easier ;)

Have you tried adsl-setup???

debug mode and it tells me that the ipchains command is not found! I presume
because iptables are used in Redhat8. Am I ever going to get this program to
work or should I revert to 3.4.7 of the rp-pppoe (ie the default)?

Either should work

that it mentions I should delete from the route table. Umm <sheepish>, where
do I find this table?

man route

have this static ip address and the gateway address that they provided, but
this doesn't work either. I always get the same sorts of errors in
/var/log/messages:

OK, using pppoe you shouldnt have any addresses bound to the ethernet card at
all. The only time you do this is if your ADSL is bridged ethernet (I think
its called) where you dont even have to authenticate.....

Assuming its PPPOE, go into /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and
remove any configuration concerning IPs, Netmasks and Gateways (actually,
remove nearly everything except maybe ONBOOT) and ifdown eth0, ifup eth0 and
see (through running ifconfig) that the interface has no IP address or
anything. Then run adsl-setup, put in the relevant data and voila! hopefully
