You're srunning samba on your gateway?

I've set up a couple of sites with Squid/Guard as proxy server on
the gateway/firewall. Mail gets forwarded from there as well.

Indeed. The 486/66 with 8MB of RAM I've been using for 4 years as
firewall on a modem line is still fine 99.5% of the time. Most of
the problems it has are down to a lack of RAM. Previous uptime was
180 days. Then the thunderstorms came around and with all the UPS
cycling, the AT PSU wedged - preventing the system from booting
properly.

There's a huge blacklist loaded by the smtpd every few seconds with
about 1000 spam attacks repelled per day.

No GUI of any sort loaded.
