[plug] restoring a debian system?

Hi all,

A while ago I fscked up my debian system trying to get it to dual boot
under vmware for windows, which left the reiser partition a little broken,
and without a way to fsck it. So I backed up as much of /etc & /home as
was available. In /var the dpkg stuff was also broken, but I found a
backup of the dpkg status file in /var/backups (how nice). So I've
reinstalled the base system & want to install all the packages I had
before, from the dpkg status file. Anyone have/know of any scripts to do
this?

Also would I be able to just replace the status file for aptitude with the
old version?

Also any tips for converting a knoppix system to pure debian sid?
