Or you can pass "--rootcmd fakeroot" to make-kpkg and make sure you
have fakeroot installed.

They will always land in the directory containing the source tree.
You should just be able to use "dpkg -i <package.deb>" to install
them.

The stamp-* files just tell the make-kpkg scripts what it's already
done and at what time.
