Hi guys,

Further details ... brand new D865GBFLK Intel motherboard with P4 2.4G
hyperthreading Intel processor.
Disk is 40G and during original install.

I made a floppy. This floppy boots and I am quite able to access all
partitions and files. I just can't boot.

Yes I did run lilo after kernel installation. In fact I've run it many
times ... well a couple of times.

I even tried to dpkg the initial 2.4.22 kernel too ...

The reference to the map file is interesting. It is the only file in the
/boot directory with todays date on it... the mvlinuz file has yesterdays
date on it !! The map file is very large also compared to everything else
in the directory.

Clearly, there is a trick at the end of the kernel install process that I
missed. (Before compiling the kernel I did a 'make clean')

What about the 'boot.0300' and 'boot.301' files?? Is one a backup? Can I
overwrite the original??

Any help would be appreciated,

Steve
