Personally I prefer the plain non-explorer version (mine says
"Intellimouse w/Intellieye v1.0 - Made in Mexico" (!)) - I'm not sure if
they're still around though. They're white and smaller than the
explorer, and have a much better hand-fitting shape. (There's another
Microsoft mouse that I've seen around a lot which, like the Explorer,
has an evil-looking glowing red LED at the back and buttons on either
side of the mouse that are too easy to click accidentally. Don't like
that one much either.)

Yes, this is a good idea. It's hard to tell which of the 42 conflicting
recommendations from Plug are from someone like-minded until you
actually try the things. I did the same at Officeworks a few years ago,
and ended up buying a Logitech keyboard and Microsoft optical mouse;
they're about the only bits of my computer that I haven't replaced
since! (*thinks* Okay, the floppy drive and cheapo ethernet card are
still there, too.)
Cheers,
Cameron.
