Here is a comparison I did in February between vendor conventions and
their possible consequences if used for the naming of future versions of
Mac OS X (Sun is know for letting its marketing dictate its versioning):

Solaris 8 SunOS 5.8
 => Mac OS X 3 Darwin 10.3

 => Mac OS X 4 Darwin Kernel Version 7.2.1_03

Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1)
