I have found it practical to patch debian packages in the past. While 
the debian packaging system is a bit of a challenge, making changes to 
an already packaged program isn't particularly hard. "apt-get source 
packagename" and patch the tree appropriately then 'fakeroot 
debian/rules binary'.

That said, I wouln't want to have to do things like bring a debian 
package up to a newer upstream version.
