If pair gain is the only thing preventing you from getting ADSL, then
I'd be bitching to Telstra every day until they give you straight
copper. If you're a school, they can't have pair gained all of your
lines? If you're on a RIM, thats a different story, but Telstra are
supposed to pursue alternate paths for providing ADSL now, including
removing pair gain if there is sufficient copper available to give you
direct copper. If you can get ISDN, they can remove the pair gain on
your line. Because for ISDN, they have to give you a full copper pair.

But of course pair gains is only one thing that can prevent you from
getting ADSL. Distance from the exchange (in relation to signal loss),
being on a RIM or sub-exchange etc.

I looked at wireless myself (I moved house to an area without ADSL from
an area with it), but didn't think it was all that good an option. As
to get wireless equipment that is reliable (i.e. doesn't need to be
touched basically and has no issues with occasional lock-ups etc.),
you'll be paying a bit of money - Cisco type money.
