Your issue was a "voice line" problem - dialup being close enough. His 
is ADSL, and with - *gasp* - a competing provider, no less. I think 
that's pretty much all the answer that's needed, alas.

A few people have dropped *hints* about ways to deal with this by 
/making/ it a voice line problem. Perhaps you may wish to try it - I 
know it's worked in the past.
