The Debian seems to use sasl2:

$ ldd /usr/bin/mutt | grep sasl
        libsasl2.so.2 => /usr/lib/libsasl2.so.2 (0x40065000)

Having said that, I find that mutt's IMAP support is only barely
acceptable (and yet still manages to tickle a couple of dovecot bugs
:-/) and it wouldn't surprise me if the things that you want just
aren't implemented on mutt's side of things.
