I have a set I features or attributes I would like
a linux desk top to have and am looking at the  best way to go about it.

I would like the user to  have access to a selected suite of programs
web, office productivity etc.

but not be able to .

Alter menus or add menu items.
Add or alter default applications or their configuration.
Add or alter icons or their position.

Not be able to view the full file tree outside their home directory.
Not be able to view hidden files.

I have been looking at KDE 3.* series Kiosk mode which requires pretty 
exhaustive hand editing of
kdeglobal and kickerrc files and permission changes.

I'm wondering if there is a simpler way to go about it.

This is for home use but under combat conditions.
