Depends. some drivers/soundcards now-a-days have a special recording
channel call post mix or something of the like (they all call it
different) but basically its a source of the final mix of sound that is
being sent out the line out port. as to exactly which cards have it all
I know is that my creative live 5.1 has it.

other than having that in the driver/hardware, alsa may have a generic
sink that can write to files never done much with alsa. or yes you can
do the cable out and back in, its prone to feedback tho.
