[plug] network access failure

Hi

I'm having fun I'm having fun I'm having fun...*not*

In trying to get my new radeon card working I tried an "upgrade" from
the installation disks in the hope that any missing stuff would be
installed.  No such luck.  I think it's stuffed my network.

/var/log/messages now indicates "failed to detect plug status" where
it used to say"using detection mode: SIOCETHTOOL."  

Any clues???

BTW - the radeon is mostly working now....
