dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig, and enable bitmapped fonts.  This is 'cos
there's now two different font systems with most newer apps
(e.g. GNOME, KDE, OO.o, Mozilla) using fontconfig+freetype, while
older ones use core X fonts.  The newer system does antialiasing and
makes it a heck of a lot easier to install new fonts; it also makes it
easier for the programmes to support printing, as it provides direct
access to the font files when necessary.  Hopefully the old one will
all but disappear in the not too distant future.
