I agree with your sentiments and find much the same on my desktop at home.

If you use a lot of terminal-based programmes you'll find using xterm
rather than gnome-terminal makes everything feel /substantially/
faster.  Gnome Terminal feels very sluggish to me; mutt should not
have a "frame rate" when it redraws! :-P

I'd look into using software suspend (http://swsusp.sf.net/).  Not
only does it save boot time -- my desktop takes rather less than a
minute to do its BIOS stuff and then read in a compressed image -- but
more importantly you'll have everything open just as you left it when
you suspend.  Keep OO.o open and you won't have to worry about how
long it takes to start either :-)
