Gentoo uses forums extensively and it is a great resource - but usually
the last one to consult. Too much irrelevant rubbish, any of the more
interesting threads are so many pages long that you cant ever be
bothered. Also the web interface is lousy - slow and clunky are the
words that come to mind, especially slow! and its a lot faster than the
average forum as well.
I have used news a lot in the past and find that for me it is a big turn
off. Having to have another window open, that requires more manual
intervention than email eventually killed it for me. I started with
tin, went through a number of gui readers with knews the last one I
bothered with. Again, collects too much rubbish, address harvesting,
difficulty in trying to find old posts after they have expired and so
on.
email is where its at as far as I can see.
