Aah. Now that makes sense. Your distro probably has X configured not to 
be setuid root, and probably uses pam_console to control who can start 
the X server. If you run the X server as root that should work, though 
it will complicate access to your ssh keys. Make sure you can run X 
first - just type "X :1" then enter (you can get out again with 
CTl-ALT-Backspace). Once you have things set up so you can run the X 
server, then look at using startx and ssh.

The remote host probably also uses pam_console, though why it would be 
using it to control permission to run Xnest I don't know.

It would be very helpful if you could provide some more details, such as 
the distros the local and remote machines are running and what versions 
they are. Mentioning important information such as "I ran this command 
from the console and ..." is also helpful. I prefer not to have to 
guess what you're doing or what you mean in order to attempt to answer 
your questions.
