Yeah, the gnomes on an un-usability crusade - however, most of the
things can be changed using the xml config files - just like windows and
registry - with the same consequences if you get it wrong. 

 Current gnome is worse for the user than KDE, though after trying kde
for a while, I went back to gnome and spent a few hours researching how
to fix most of the "improvements"  The main one I miss now is right
click the desktop and get a disk mount menu, instead I have to search
the desktop for a stupid icon, wait for the dialog to open, click the
right icon, wait again, close the dialog box.  Yeah, a big improvement,
though I did learn to never, never, ever ask if it can be changed back
when on gnome IRC
