You should probably be using mii-tool or ethtool (if possible) to find
out what speed your cards have negotiated (assuming your card supports
them, as my built in 3Com does not). Then if they have negotiated 1Gb,
try using scp to transfer a file, I've always achieved best rates using
that :)
