I find it hard to imagine a simpler method of installing software;
beyond what was previously discussed as demand-driven installation.

Yast makes selection very easy or as hard as you want.
apt-get etc are all supported directly from 10.0

Is ftp.iinet.net.au on WAIX?

Only the commercial products have been locked down; which isn't
recent btw. It's been that way for as long as I've been vaguely
interested. SuSE's was selling commercial products based on Linux
for a long time before Novell bought them.

Making everybody pay for maintenance would be extremely
counter-productive and would kill both sales and market penetration.
openSuSE will "always" be free. You will have to pay if you use
Novell support for a partular case.
