If what you want is to simply share an Internet connection and you don't 
specifically want to set it up protocol by protocol, you would probably 
be happier using NAT routing rather than a proxy server. This is 
handled by IP tables.

Depending on the situation, you may not even need to set up a computer 
for this, as many ADSL modems have router capabilities. There are of 
course some advantages of letting a Linux box handle it rather than an 
embedded device, but there are also disadvantages.
