[plug] Ubuntu, lost sound

Howdy one and all,

At the next workshop that is on monday 24th will anybody have a few spare copies of 
the latest Ubuntu release???
What is the latest Mandriva Linux???


I get the following error message as soon as I have logged in

                                   Error

                   No volume control elements and/or devices found


There is no problem doing an   apt-get  but not sure what would be most appropriate
/best sound elements to download to resolve the above, 
A recommendation please
The operating system is Debian ETCH
