[plug] Firefox/Thunderbird problem with Mandriva 2006 still unresolved

Help (more help) needed please.
Despite garry's suggestion of setting proxies and my (blind) fiddling with 
properties, both firefox (1.0.6-15mdk) snd thunderbird (1.0.6-6mdk) time out 
when connecting to the net. Firefox returns "Connecting to www.mozilla.org" 
and then advises "Alert - Operation timed out while attempting to contact 
www.mozilla.org" and thunderbird shows "Connecting to mail.dialix.com.au" but 
just stops after about 4 minutes...
Konqueror and kmail, on the other hand, work fine.
Does anyone have any clues please - I've had no joy with mozilla forums etc.
