When your machine and local network is otherwise quiet, run

  tethereal -n -i eth0

in a terminal as root (or with sudo), and immediately try to connect
to mozilla.org using a newly started firefox.  This should show you
what firefox is trying to do, and may show you where the error is.
Paste the output here if you need others to interpret it for you.

This is assuming the interface from this machine to the wider world is
eth0.  Change that if it's on another interface.
