[plug] XWindows failure on Debian sarge

Hello, everyone.

Firstly, whilst at the login prompt, the system is shown to be
"testing/unstable", the sources file refers to "stable", so I am
assuming that the system was "testing/unstable", when sarge was in the
"testing" stage, and, after it went to "stable", the sources file was
changed, but the system still thinks that it is "testing/unstable", at
the login prompt. I think that the "unstable" component was because, a
couple (?) of years ago, when mono or the other Linux equivalent of
.NET, came out, it was only available in "unstable", so Anne had to
adjust dependencies to accommodate them, when this was her computer. I
think that the system tends to regard itself as a sarge system, apart
from at the login prompt. From what I have read, to "downgrade" the
system to "stable", is about as safe as running "experimental", in that
the "downgrade" action is strongly recommended against doing.

Anyway, we had a power failure last week (as is the usual thing), which
led to another journalling failure after having booted up afterwards and
being unable to shut the system down after yet another Firefox crash.

After a reboot, with having had to use fsck on the root partition (as
part of the boot process, not after bootup, when it is mounted),
XWindows didn't work any more. The error message had referred to gdm
needing to be set up or something, but that didn't work.

I have tried a number of different things, including, using the Debian
3.1 Bible book, running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (p173), and
removing and reinstalling x-window-system-core and x-window-system and
xterm (to install and configure XFree86 as shown on page 169).

The latter attempt did not result in, as stated in the book, the
"When the packages have downloaded, you'll be presented with a number of
questions to determine the correct configuration for your computer",
but, as happens with apt-get install, the last thing shown on the
screen, is "setting up <name of package installed>", so I figured that
it had found existing settings, and set up XWindows.

I then tried to run XWindows (again...), using startx, and got an error
message, that referred to a log file, /var/log/XFree86.0.log. I have
appended that file below.

In looking at the file below, while writing this, I note that the fourth
line of the file, refers to
"Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.8-16.0508-2 i686 [ELF]", which I
assume, refers to the 2.6.x kernel, and I have a 2.4.x kernel. I do not
know whether that is or could be the problem, or part of the problem.

I have not taken any action to report this problem as a bug, as
mentioned in the file below, as I figure that the problem lies with my
system, rather than with the application.

I have tried looking, and cannot find how to upgrade the kernel,
without building and compiling a kernel, which sounds to me, to be as
scary as trying to configure and run sendmail. From meemory, upgrading a
kernel, can result in incompatibilities with packages that are installed
with a kernel version that is earlier than the version being installed.

Can someone please tell me how to fix the problem with XWindows?

Thanks in anticipation.
